Breadcrumbs is a magic adventure fantasy about fifth-grader Hazel and her best friend
Jack who imagine fabulous games together until Jack suddenly stops playing with her. When Jack goes missing, Hazel follows the trail of her only friend into a magical world filled with fairy tale characters who were once people in the real world. Be prepared. Fairy tales are not always what they seem to be.
Anne Ursu shifts traditional perspectives on evil, and the witch in Breadcrumbs bears strong resemblance to Narnia’s White Witch except she jokes about it in a meta-fictive way and she says she wants nothing. She takes Jake, however, and begins turning him to ice. Hazel intends to save him, whether he wants to be saved or not.
Reworked Andersen’s fairy tales and literary references to Coraline, When You Reach Me, The Golden Compass, Harry Potter, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and A Wrinkle In Time add to the pleasure of reading this book.
I hope to read this one soon!
You’ll love it, I’m sure.
